Last week, from October 10th to 14th, took place in Las Vegas, Nevada, the last edition of Supply Side West, the the world’s largest event for healthy and innovative ingredients, and BTSA was there in its own booth to seize all the business opportunities of this major event.

For CPG manufacturers, marketers and product developers, this must-attend event offers access to new suppliers, ingredients and ideas under one roof. BTSA joined thousands of food, cosmetic and supplement professionals at the one global event that brings them together, and made a very positive balance.

We also took the opportunity to establish new business contacts and to strengthen business relationships with our U.S. and Canada distributors, and where able to share with them all our news and new developments that we have been working on during the past months.

At the end, and after a lot of hard work, we are confident that this effort will be worthwhile, and we are sure that we'll notice the value of all those meetings and contacts with other companies very soon.  We cannot do anything else but to be satisfied and we'll be looking forward to be there next year!

Another factor to note is our presence in FoodPro 2011, the sector's most important trade fair held in Sydney last July and that in its previous edition reached about 300 exhibitors.

BTSA Biotecnologías Aplicadas, under the PRONAOS Project which aims to research aimed at developing a new generation of food for weight control and prevention of obesity, has done research in a new derivative of oleic acid .

The research activities have focused on the characterization and functional analysis of two ingredients: hydroxyoleic acid 2 and omega-3 concentrates.  

This research has successfully managed to stabilize these ingredients and protect them against oxidation in isolation and long term periods, through its combination with naturalantioxidants produced by BTSA.

Foods fortified with functional ingredients have achieved great results in blind tastings, as they have not shown alterations in taste and smell of them. This allows us to modify the composition of the product without altering the organoleptic characteristics it possesses.

The PRONAOS project ("scientific research aimed at developing a new generation of food for weight control and prevention of obesity") is one of 14 major strategic industrial research projects approved in the fourth edition of the CENIT Programme, framed Ingenio in 2010.

The purpose of PRONAOS is investigating the factors that regulate systems controlling body weight for the development of food to weight management and obesity prevention, siding with the NAOS strategy.

The results of the study conducted by CSIC (Superior Council for Scientific Research) through the Rancimat method, shows that TOCOBIOL® PLUS GP increases oxidative stability up to 153%.

The objective of the study is to compare the antioxidant activity of TOCOBIOL® versus oregano extract and tocopherols in vegetable oils (sunflower oil) at 120°C.

The main conclusions of the study were the following:

• TOCOBIOL® PLUS L-70 clearly shows a higher antioxidant activity when compared to oregano extract and tocopherols. Both products have been tested under the exact same conditions and at the same dose in order to obtain reproducible results.

• The addition of 1,000 ppm and 2.000 ppm of TOCOBIOL® PLUS L-70 increases the oxidative stability of sunflower oil in 103% and 115,6%, respectively, while the same doses of oregano extract and tocopherols only reaches an increase of 18,7% and 20,3%.

• When using a dose of 1,000 ppm TOCOBIOL® PLUS GP stability of sunflower oil increases approximately 64%. It is remarkable that a dose of 2,000 ppm TOCOBIOL® PLUS GP, we can reach an antioxidant activity of 16.2 Rancimat hours, resulting in an increase of stability of the oil of 153%. This shows that using products of our TOCOBIOL® range it can be reached a stability value twice as high as the original value. However this does not occur when using oregano extract and tocopherols, that only reaches an increase of oxidative stability of 20,3%.

After the nomination of the new board, BTSA Biotecnologías Aplicadas will hold the presidency of BioMadrid.

Last June 14th, BioMadrid's General Assembly agreed to appoint the new Board which will be chaired by Mr. Ángel Fernández de la Puebla, on behalf of BTSA Biotecnologías Aplicadas.

BTSA will be joined on the leadership team of the association for the next two years by various renowned companies as Merck Serono, Agrenvec, Diomune or Genetrix.

"Illusion and work" was the proposal of the new president before his appointment. "We will work to raise the awareness of the association and to let people know what biotech firms are doing in Madrid. The general public needs to know that we work on matters as important as new treatments for cancer, better food or more efficient biofuels, and the difficulties that we found in these developments. "

These statements were quickly enshrined as the new elected Board informed the assembly of its disposal to defend the interests of the industry in the current economic crisis by strengthening the services offered to partners.

EFA’s  are unsaturated long-chain fatty acids that are essential to the health of the human body, which cannot produce them naturally on its own. Omega-3s, 6s and 9s are EFA’s but are not considered essential because they can be produced by our body. Technically our system only needs LNA (omega-3 linolenic acid) and LA (omega-6 linoleic acid) and it can use enzymes to convert these two into several different beneficial fatty acids such as the omega-3s eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), as well as the omega-6 gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) and arachidonic acid (AA). However, the conversion from LNA to EPA and DHA is widely reported as inadequate. Research has shown the average conversion rate is between 2% and 15%, with the conversion to EPA much better than to DHA, which is further down the metabolic line. Considering this poor conversion, EPA- and/or DHA-containing ingredients have become popular in the EFA market segment.

In fact, the EFA market is being driven primarily from omega-3 fatty acids, which have been growing at 10 percent to 18 percent across different regions in the globe, according to Frost & Sullivan. The firm further reported 90 percent of the estimated $1.5 billion in global omega-3 revenues in 2010 (85 percent in North America and 93 percent in Europe) were from marine-source omega-3 ingredients, rich sources of EPA and DHA. Frost put the average global growth rate for base year 2010 at about 18 percent for both all-source and marine omega-3 ingredients.

This market is driven by a consistent stream of positive research on the health benefits of increased intake and consumption of omega-3 supplements and foods. “With regard to marine derived omega-3 fatty acids, the market has basically been driven by solid science,” said Baldur Hjaltason, sales and business development director for EPAX AS. “In 2001, there were 7,894 papers listed in PubMed on omega-3s; in 2008, they were up to 13,5000 papers. Thereof, 1127 were randomized control trials (RCT) and 288 based on meta-analysis and systematic reviews.” He added the success of the first marine omega-3 concentrate as a prescription drug in the United States has also got the attention of the consumer.

Natural Marketing Institute (NMI) has shown most consumers (87 percent) say scientific and clinical evidence of efficacy is why they buy and use any given supplement. The firm also noted out of a survey population comprised mostly of primary grocery shoppers, 23 percent used omega-3 supplements in 2009, up from 14 percent in 2004. Additionally, 19 percent feel deficient in omega-3s, and 23 percent feel deficient in fish oil, the most common source of omega-3 EPA and DHA.

As the adult population is increasing, prostate cancer (PCa) will become a considerable health problem in the next millennium. This has raised public interest in potential chemoprevention of this disease. As PCa is extremely common and generally slow to progress it is regarded as an ideal candidate for chemoprevention. At present, the 5 alpha-reductase inhibitors finasteride and dutasteride have been identified as preventive agents. This review describes whether selenium, alpha-tocopherol,  isoflavones, lycopene green tea polyphenols, calcium, and resveratrol may be useful for decreasing the risk of PCa in men. Although encouraging results are present, some studies show negative results. Differences in study design, sample size, dose administered, and/or concentrations achieved in the body may be the reason for these inconsistencies. Today, chemopreventive agents may be appropriate for high-risk patients like those with high-grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia and other high-risk groups such as patients with elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) and negative biopsy, rapid PSA velocity, and with a family history of PCa. Although larger randomized controlled studies are needed and epidemiologic evidence should be placed in a clinical context, physicians must be aware of these preventive opportunities in PCa care. Combinations of chemopreventive agents should be carefully investigated because mechanisms of action may be additive or synergistic.
